Root canal treatment to save natural teeth

Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment) is an effective solution for teeth that have become internally infected. The pulp tissue within teeth is made up of an intricate combination of nerves and blood vessels, and these can be vulnerable to infection from bacteria and decay.

The condition can be very painful and, if it isn’t properly treated, can ultimately lead to the affected tooth having to be taken out. In addition, there is a possibility that the infection will spread to the neighbouring teeth.

Fortunately, successful root canal treatment is able to save and restore infected teeth, allowing them to look and function as before.

Root canal treatment FAQs

The first step is for us to carefully examine your teeth, assess the extent of the issue and prepare for treatment.

The procedure itself begins with the removal of the internal pulp and the cleaning of the root canals (under local anaesthetic). The tooth is then temporarily filled and a return appointment scheduled.

At the next appointment, the tooth is permanently filled before being sealed. In some cases a new crown is then fitted on top to add extra strength and protection to the tooth.

In some cases treatment can be carried out in a single visit.

The condition is most commonly caused by bacteria entering the inner chambers of the tooth and infecting the blood vessels and nerves within the pulp tissue. This can occur due to decay, a damaged filling, or an injury.

Although indications of the condition can vary, the most common symptoms are:

  • Sensitivity when consuming hot and cold food/drinks
  • Pain while chewing or biting
  • Swelling of the gums
  • Discolouration of the tooth enamel
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth

Root canal treatment is frequently associated with discomfort and anxiety in a lot of people’s minds. The reality, however, is a lot less distressing.

Thanks to highly effective anaesthetics and the latest treatment techniques, the process itself should be painless. Some may experience slight sensitivity for a short period afterwards, though this can be managed by over-the-counter pain medication.

In most instances, a root canal procedure can significantly prolong the lifespan of a tooth for about 10-15 years. Maintaining good oral hygiene and consistently attending check-ups and hygiene appointments at the clinic can further increase its longevity, potentially for a lifetime.
